How to Stop Spam Calls Using VoIP.ms
3 February 2022Spam calls are not just annoying—they can disrupt your day, pose security risks, and waste valuable time. If you’re tired of asking, “How do I stop spam calls?”, integrating VoIP solutions like VoIP.ms into your communication setup can offer effective strategies to stop spam calls once and for all. VoIP.ms offers powerful features, such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), which can be used as an effective VoIP robocall blocker.
Joshua Wells has been a VoIP.ms customer for over a year, and one of the reasons for his satisfaction with our services is our capability to offer features that impede spam calls. Joshua has worked with a different VoIP provider that did not fully help him resolve his spam calls problem, especially with the increase of spam calls seen in the last years, where it began to be a nuisance both to his personal and business communications needs. When he switched to VoIP.ms, he completely got rid of this problem and eliminate spam calls.
The Situation
Like many of us, Joshua received an average of two to three spam calls on his phone daily. At times it was a recording asking for a payment, other times it was a recording in a foreign language. Neither were legitimate calls. In the beginning, the only problem these calls caused was annoyance for him, who had to pick up the call and add another number to his phone blocker ID list. However, as time went on, Joshua increasingly started to have a higher chance of missing calls from people who needed to talk to him, and he decided he no longer could afford the luxury of blocking any unknown caller ID.

Joshua was well familiar with VoIP solutions as he used to subscribe to another provider for over a decade. However, because he used his number not only to fulfill his personal communication needs but also to receive phone calls for web-design services he offered, he needed a permanent solution to filter spam and robocalls.
The Solution to stop spam calls
As soon as Joshua joined VoIP.ms and set up the IVR feature he created a simple recording filter that blocked both spam and robocalls: ‘If you’re not a telemarketer, please press 7′. As a result, all robocalls started to be filtered, and his phone only rang when it was a legitimate caller. Joshua went further ahead and whitelisted his trusted contacts’ phone numbers with the Caller ID filtering tool, which allows a set of predefined numbers to bypass the voice recording.
Solution Components
The following features on VoIP.ms customer portal had to be activated to allow Joshua to successfully implement a spam call filter and block undesired spam and robocalls:
- A Digital Receptionist (IVR) – the main component to enable call filtering.
- Recording – a simple recording of the message played once someone reaches him.
- CallerID Filtering – allowing users to whitelist a pre-defined list of callers to bypass the IVR rule.
All these features can be easily found under the DID Numbers option within VoIP.ms customer portal.

The Impact
Even though spam and robocalls did not impact Joshua too negatively, he still had to deal with it before implementing VoIP.ms solution. After the full set-up, he finally got rid of those three to four daily undesired calls making him waste time and money, and most importantly, bringing down the risk of missing an important call from a potential new customer looking for web design services. Imagine how our solution could also benefit not only residential customers but also organizations with multiple DID numbers.
