Back to Basics: What is an IP Phone?

5 November 2019 Tags:

IP phones are physical office phones that make use of Voice over IP. It connects the phone service through the existing internet infrastructure, by using an Ethernet cable. IP phones include cordless phones, conference phones and desk phones which resemble a lot like a traditional.

That being said, using an IP phone for your business communication requirement offers the same experience as that of using a traditional phone system. However, there are some key differences between the two which include access to advanced features and cheaper call rates as compared to traditional phone systems.

How do IP Phones Work?

IP Phones work by reading voice signals and converting them into digital signals, which are then sent over the internet in the form of digital packets. In other words, an IP Phone handles the telephone conversation and routes it through a VoIP phone provider over the internet. The IP Phone receives these digital packets and converts them into voice signals again to be heard by the receiver.

Advantages of IP Phones

  1. Cost-Savings
IP Phones make use of the internet to send and receive calls. That means the business does not have to invest in copper wires for carrying analog signals around the office. Businesses can make use of the existing internet infrastructure within the office to connect IP phones. Thus, there is no need for the business to have complex hardware requirements, which reduces the cost of the business substantially.
  1. Similar to Traditional Phones
IP Phones have the same look and feel like that of a traditional phone system. It comes with a receiver, keypad to make calls and a button to hold and transfer calls. Apart from this, there is not much need for the business to further train and educate their employees on how to make use of an IP Phone. Everything is the same as of the traditional phone – the receiver, the screen, and the buttons. The only difference is the addition of advanced functionalities which makes them a better alternative to analog phones.

Final Thoughts

IP Phones are a great alternative that can be used in any location, thus making it easier for businesses to expand and hire workers to work remotely. As businesses do not have to invest in copper wires, VoIP becomes a smart spending option for businesses as setting up VoIP system is easy as it does not require your company to maintain any hardware on-site.
